On Sept. 27 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada, Kenworth Trucks introduced to the world their latest addition to the company’s iconic W900 line – the Kenworth W990 tractor.

Mike Dozier, Kenworth Trucks’ general manager and vice president of Paccar said, that the new tractor isn’t going to be a replacement for the W900L. “The W900L’s not going anywhere, but we’re planning for the future and so it’s another product to address what your business needs as well as addressing what drivers expect,” Dozier explained.

Available in a day cab, 40-inch flat top, and 52-inch, and 76-inch mid-roof sleeper configuration, the W990 is designed for line haul, pickup and delivery, regional haul, and heavy haul operations.

The W990’s body is as big as expected – 131.5 inches from bumper to back of the cab. The tractor comes standard with the Paccar’s powertrain – MX-13 engine with 510-hp and 1,850 pound-feet of torque, the 12-speed Paccar automated transmission and Paccar 40K tandem rear axles. The cab platform is 2.1-meter – the one that is also used for the T680 and T880 models.

Home on the road

The Driver’s studio comes with a 180-degree swivel passenger seat, a rotating table for two, a drawer-style refrigerator and space for a microwave. The sleeper boasts ample LED lighting, and under the lower bunk there is room for a full-size wardrobe, multiple drawers and more storage. Also Kenworth’s premium audio package - 320-watt amp, 10-inch subwoofer and eight speakers; swivel TV mount for up to a 28-inch flat screen TV; and optional EpicVue pre-wire for satellite TV.

“Anything we can do to help them feel more comfortable, feel a sense of pride…that’s what we’re doing today,” said Dozier. “We are passionate about our products, our customers that depend on them, and the drivers that operate them. We know that there are many customers and drivers out there who share our passion. The Kenworth W990 represents the pride, image and freedom of trucking, and captures the spirit of what trucking is all about.”

Kenworth W990 comes standard with the Kenworth TruckTech+remote diagnostics system and the Kenworth NAV+HD 7-inch in-dash display, which gives full access to the truck-specific navigation, vehicle data, roadside assistance, audio control, hands-free calling, blind-spot camera inputs and internet connection.Аlso features an 1,800-watt inverter that includes shore power connection and four standard 120-volt sleeper outlets

Exterior design

The Kenworth W990 comes with a long hood design and stainless steel grille. “It had to be pure Kenworth and it needed to be instantly recognizable as the top-of-the-line. We maintained the traditional cathedral shape to the grille and the inset surfaces at the top to give it a refined tailored look. That powerful center spear signifies this is part of the new generation of Kenworth trucks and the tapered grille spears are there for a classic touch. It’s elegant, beautiful, and full of brawn.” Said Jonathan Duncan, Kenworth Trucks’ design director.

The W990 will be shown on the upcoming North American Road tour, which begins Oct. 10 in Atlanta.
