It’s the most wonderful time of the year as Andy Williams once said. However, our vision of Christmas would have never been the same if it was not for that Coca Cola’s Truck commercial. The big red twinkling truck has turned into a symbol of the festive season. Here are 5 things you don’t know about this iconic Christmassy sight.

1. Back in the days when the commercial went out in 1995 the truck we all saw was nothing more but effects. They were not done by any random effect studio though. Industrial Light and Magic, the company behind Star Wars, created Coca-Cola’s famous truck image.

2. Santa’s trucks also known as “Christmas Caravans” were decorated with over 30 000 bulbs turning them into a real light-spectacle.

3. Soon after its premiere the commercial reached over 100 countries and turned into the most often used ad ever. In order to introduce the new holiday packaging in 1996 the Coca-Cola truck was screened all over the world – the USA, the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, South Africa, Singapore and the Philippines. “Holidays Are Coming” is part of top ten most loved ads of all times which was shot in Vancouver, Canada. Today around two million people visit the Coca-Cola website just to find out more about the truck stops.

4. The illuminated lorries usually set on a tour at the end of November and wrap up two or three days before Christmas Day. This year the truck is touring around the UK.

5. The twenty-one-year old Coca-Cola Christmas Trucks would not have been the same without the face of the most beloved Santa Claus whose image was born in 1931. Later on Haddon Sundblom retouched his appearance as we know it today.
