So, you’ve decided that becoming a truck driver is suitable career path for you? Congratulations and welcome to an exciting new world! You’ll visit beautiful new places, meet interesting people and you will get paid for all that – excited already? Of course, as with every new career, truck driving has its secrets, but we are here to help you with some handy tips, so you can learn the ropes and get the hang of it faster.

1. Punctuality

10 or 15 minutes may not seem like a big deal to you, but when delivering loads and packages – being late can actually affect the lives of many people. The truck industry is very competitive and each company builds reputation based on punctual delivery and quality. If you deliver the load on time – you are a dependable trucker and furthermore – your company is a dependable company. If you’re late and you often deliver the goods after the deadline – you are building bad reputation for you, for your company and you are hurting the business of the client. Deliver on time.

2. Hard work

Everyone wants to get on the right foot with their company. If you refuse a delivery load – you are off to a bad start. You need to show your employer you are dependable and you work hard. So, never say “no” to a consignment and deliver it on time or even ahead of schedule, as long as it is humanly possible and within the law. It may sound like a lot of grinding, but remember – professionals become professionals with hard work and commitment. If you take care of you career – it will take care of you, too.

3. Truck insurance

The first and foremost thing you should look into, if you are into the heavy vehicle business, you are the owner of your truck or trucks, is the truck insurance. While trucks might seem as impenetrable fortresses of steel – the risks on the road for them are quite bigger, so you need to get your truck insured. Most companies offer comprehensive truck insurance packages, as we do, covering physical damage, occupational accidents or non-trucking liability (sometimes referred to as Bobtail Insurance). Consult with insurance companies and get yourself the best insurance tailored to your needs.

4. Road rules

Deadlines and on time deliveries are vital for your career, but you should comply with the rules on the road and drive as safely as possible. This means no speeding, no bright lights flashing and no dangerous driving. Pass other vehicles only when it is safe to do so and do not try to overtake. Also, steer away from alcohol and drugs and by all means necessary – do not fall asleep while driving. If you are feeling exhausted and need to rest – take a break, because being on time is good, but as a driver, your first responsibility is to deliver the load safely. Even the shortest breaks can improve your concentration and awareness.

5. Know your territory

If you are new to truck driving and delivery, there is a big chance you won’t be familiar with all the roads you’ll travel. Taking a wrong turn means less time on your clock, which can lead to late delivery. So, to avoid this, you will need to get a map. It is mandatory for long distance travels and will, no doubt, get you out of a few sticky situations. Yes, nowadays people use their phones, tablets etc. to find their way, but on the road you will not always have the luxury of good coverage, so a physical map is a must. Plus, it doesn’t take a lot of room when you fold it, so no problem there, too.

We hope these tips can help you start your career in a trucking company or delivering loads with your own truck. Stay sharp and stay safe.
