Tesla – The New Age of Trucking

 Remember those futuristic films with self-driving trucks and vehicles in them? That was a dream not long ago. Not anymore. Tesla has revealed the new Semi truck, which will turn the trucking industry upside down. We’ve seen some conceptual models so far, but this is something real. Let’s check out some of the features that Tesla has announced.

The quickest acceleration!

According to Tesla, the Semi will accelerate from 0 – 60 mph fully loaded with 80k lbs for just 20 sec. and for 5 sec. without the trailer. That is 3 times faster than an average truck. Also on a 5% grade it can speed up to 65 mph. Well, that’s interesting, isn’t it! But that’s not even close to the coolest feature.

Safest Truck Ever!

This truck will have Enhanced Autopilot! Are we in 2100 something year already? That sounds like an airplane, but it’s not. Semi will stop automatically with it’s emergency braking system. Also there’s automatic lane keeping for the truckers who loves to sleep while driving and forward collision warning system. That means you can literally drive and have diner, while watching your favorite show or movie. Because of it’s four independent motors, one on each wheel, Semi can dynamically adjust the torque on each wheel, so jackknifing is impossible.

Range, range, range! 

Elon Musk himself promised that Semi can run 500 miles range with max weight at max speed. The actual words were “You can deliver a load in the middle of nowhere and come back, without charging”! The main reason for this efficiency is the design of the truck. He actually compared it to Bugatti Chiron, which has 0.38 Cd drag coefficient and Semi has 0.36 Cd. Pretty impressive!

Driver experience 

No gears! Yep, that’s it! It has only one gear, which makes it very easy to drive. Also Semi has independent front suspension. They announced it as “the most comfortable truck ever”! Strong words. But let’s check the cockpit. The driver of this truck will have to sit as if he is in a racecar. In the center of the cockpit. On both sides there are two touchscreens with all the necessary hardware included and there’s no need of Fleet Systems integration.

1 million miles!

That’s right, it’s the Tesla’s guarantee for Semi. Musk said it won’t break down for a million miles and the break pads are forever! No transmission, so the transmission can’t break, obviously! Also no differentials and something called Nuclear Explosion Proof Glass. Cracked windshield is in the past now. Smart maintenance system predicts need of repairs, there’s also remote diagnostics and a bunch of cool other systems that can really help you take care of this truck.

So, how much?

Don’t know yet. No prices were revealed, but they said something about the cost of ownership. It sounds like this: If you have one Semi you can save $200k+ in fuel savings and a two-year payback period. But if you use their Semi Convoy System you save even more. In other words, this Semi truck will be expensive, but it will probably worth the cost.
